Terry Bernowich (Schmitz)

Just thought I would let you all know that my mother is not doing well.  Her heart doctor wanted to put her in the hospital on Thursday, May 16th to get rid of the excess fluid that she was retaining before he was going to do a heart cath on her on Monday, May 19th. Of course she was stubborn and would not go until she went to my son Darren's graduation and her great grandson's graduation.  So I took her to emergency on Saturday, May 17th and they admitted her. When they did the heart cath on Monday they were only able to shoot the dye in her veins.  They were not able to put a stent in because she was too weak.  She has 100 per cent blockage in her right carotid artery in her neck, blockage in the left carotid artery in her neck, blockages in both the left and right legs, and she has a bad heart valve.

The only thing they will be able to do is put a stent in the native artery to her heart.  They won't be able to fix any of the other problems.  She is at Kansas Christian Home for at least 2 weeks, maybe longer to get her strength built up so they can put the stent in.  She is in room 203B.  She is getting around in a wheelchair and they started helping her to use a cane today.  I guess she won't be dancing for a while!

Terry, I hope your mother can build up strength soon so that the procedures can be done.  Tell her that her classmates are all pulling for her.

Just thought I would let you all know the latest about my Mom.  She had a stroke Monday night.  My son Darren and I had gone out to the home to visit her.  She was sitting at the dining room table and was finished eating and Darren and I asked her some questions and she couldn't talk.  So we notified the nurses and they called the abulance.  We rushed her to St Francis Hospital.  She had four siezures in the emergency room.  She is not paralyzed, and can say words and phrases and knows everyone.  She is improving a little each day.  They say they can tell from the scans that she has has been having strokes for quite some time.    She is still too weak to stand on her own.  If she improves enough they will send her back to Kansas Christian Home.  She is in the Neuro Critical Care Unit, Bed 2, third floor.

Thanks for all your prayers. I will keep you posted.

Hi -

It's been awhile since I checked on our Class of 1968 site.  I like reading the news about all of you.  I hope those of you who are having health issues will be back on top of the world soon.  I loved looking at the photos from the 45th reunion.  I will definitely make the next one - wherever you have it - Las Vegas or Newton or both.

Thank you all for prayers and best wishes.  They will be transporting her back to Kansas Christian Home on Monday.  She is doing a little better.  They are walking her some every day with assistance.  She still is not eating very much.  She is talking more and making a little more sense.  I will let her know you are all thinking about her.

New thread, but I don't know how to do it.  This is out of the ordinary, but I wanted to ask.  I have a friend who moved from near me in upstate NY, to Newton.  She goes to a church in North Newton (I do not know the name, sorry,) but just wonder if anyone knows a Cheryl Rizzuto?  I was so shocked when she ended up in my home town area, and she may be rubbing shoulders with some of my classmates.  If anyone knows her, let me know.  Also, if you know of any of my ridiculus antics from school, try to forget that part when visiting with her!

It's good to hear that our class momma is doing better.  I pray she can keep improving and bless us with her presence at the next reunion.

Thanks guys for all your thoughts and prayers.  The doctor called me this morning before I went to the hospital.  She said my mom has an infection they are trying to clear up.  I think it is the bladder infection she got when she was in Newton Medical Center.  Her legs are swelling real bad and now her right arm is swelling too.  The doctor suggested we call in hospice when we get her back to the nursing home.  She said she will continue to have mini strokes or more severe strokes.  She said she will never be strong enough to have the stent put in and that she has too many other health issues.  She has been having a-fib incidents since she has been in the hospital.  I was up to see her today and she was in great spirits!  I told her you all were thinking of her and that made her happy.  She gets better every day at carrying on a conversation.  At least she is not paralyzed and can still feed herself.  She still has a good sense of humor and recognizes everybody and remembers a lot.  I will keep you posted.  Thanks everybody!!!

The Kansas Cosmosphere is a good place to take them too, unless you did that when he was an exchange student.

Abilene is fairly close and we always enjoyed seeing Old Abilene Town and the Eisenhower Museum and boyhood home.

In June at the Warkentine house, they have a display of wedding dresses - June brides and all that.  My mom's dress is one of the ones on display.  Not sure the men would enjoy it, but his girlfriend probably would.

http://www.farmersandrancherslivestock.com/index.cfm is a web site for livestock sales.  There used to be one in Salina, KS every week, but I'm not sure what day they have it now.

Hope this helps - these are all my ideas.

Terry: Just happened to have time during my lunch hour to pop on and read everyone's notes. I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. Glad to hear she is in such great spirits.

I still remember when your parents graciously took my sister & I in while my dad was at the Mayo clinic in Topeka. I believe we were still in school but it was nice enough that we walked to and from church on a Sun.

It's always been such a treat to see her at the reunions, especially on the dance floor. Sometimes, she was the only partner I get on the floor w/me!

She'll be in my prayers and I be looking foward to seeing her at the next reunion - Vegas style, Baby!!!

Blessings, Barb

Thanks so much, Barb.  She is doing fines except she is retaining fluid real bad.  She normally weighs 110 lbs.  On Tuesday she weighed 132 and Wednesday she weighed 137.  She is back a Kansas Christian Home in Room 203B.  They are taking her to the doctor Thursday to try to get some answers as to why she is retaining so much fluid since she is on lasix and going to the bathroom a lot.

Thanks for all the prayers.

Thanks for all the helping suggestions during our Denmark company. I added them to my list and let them pick and choose... We had a wonderful time and I'm still trying to unwind. We are truly blessed.

Also, thank you for all the fun birthday wishes... I must admit that turning 65 is rather a weird thought. In my mind I still feel 39 but my pore fluffy body truly feels the other. O 'Sigh! Anyway, my sweetie John installed a new backyard birthday fence so now my little doggie can poop farther away from the patio... its a birthday gift that we will both appreciated and enjoy.

love and hugs Connie

ps> 65 was not a type 'o error, but a fact!

Dear Connie,

I love you anyway!

Persons in our class of 1968 who say they are not having memory problems now and then are probably not telling the whole truth.

Roger
