Steve McCullough

Greetings Classmates!

Hope you all plan the perfect party that makes everyone very happy about turning 65! Sorry I can't attend this morning but am out of town.

I thought the format and venues for the 60th were more than  adequate and kind of nice. Of course I was somewhat involved in the planning and preparation but totally agreed with Paula & Monica that we ought to have a wee bit of an upscale event to treat ourselves. The food, location, band, music was above the normal get together and although a bit pricier than some of us folks are used to not at all out of line with what we pay if you head out of town or just go for an above average experience (darned hard to do in Newton)!

I trust we can do something out of the ordinary and memorable. I've been to rodeos before and would like to have a different experience in a different location with the same old people. Some of the other classes, notably 1963, have had good birthday parties and I think it would behoove us to check with them and others to see if they had some good ideas we could copy?

Good luck doing a difficult job. No way everyone will be happy but then let's realize that we are responsible for our own happiness and it's most likely our attitudes that keep it that way. No matter where we have the "Rodeo" I will try and be there and enjoy your company.  I nominate Linda Guhr to speak on my behalf and chair this wonderful event!

Thanks for your efforts,

Steve

STEVE -

Sorry you couldn't make the meeting this morning - it was great!

AND we have a plan. (I love Linda - she would have been great chair - but chair not needed at this point.)

PARTY INFORMATION IS POSTED ON RAILER RUMBLINGS - NOW!

I think this event will take the "rodeo" up a notch. Very happy with the plan and think ALL classmates (and other classes) will think so too.

Cowboy Up!

Does the $60 reservation fee include my senior discount?

) ) )    <-- laughing

LINDA (and ALL) -

Uhmmm . . . YES - your senior discount has been included. We had hoped this was implied with the title "65th" Birthday. NO need to whip out your AARP or MediCare card . . . BUT if you show me yours I may be able to get you a discount on a half empty bottle of wine.

Hopefully others will feel free to let us know if they have any questions or suggestions - really.

Tom C.

Cheryl Dawson (Stallard)

Does this mean I don't get a discount since I will only be 64 at the time of the party;)

Connie Hale (Rhodes)

Say! Now that I think about it, if this is a 65th BD party, I'll already be 66 yr.+ 3  months by that time... would I-could I-should 1 get a free discount  bottle of wine?

03/31/15 06:48 PM #1106

Linda Diringer (Guhr)

The check is in the mail!

?Birthday party sounds like fun. Getting a keg I see.  It's not looking good for my attendance at this event.frown

BILL (and ALL) -

BILL - we are truly sorry to hear that you might not be there. You will be missed.

At this point in life, I won’t say “Maybe next time”, because I’ve come to realize “next time” is a fleeting and fragile commodity.

Hoping to see you (and ALL) soon - Be Well.

Tom C.

Sorry Linda, you got beat out by Wil and Nancy. They are the first classmates to mail a check for our Birthday Party and it came in the mail today. Congratulations to them as they have won a FREE bottle of wine for our Saturday night at the winery. No April Fools either. Keep those checks coming.

PARTY UPDATE, QUERIES and OTHER NATURAL ODDITIES

For all those interested in information on the 65th Birthday Party, we do have an UPDATE from the Saturday Breakfast meeting (4/11) . . .

1- We have a terrific Birthday Cake for Sunday (9/6) at the Meridian Center. (Provided by anonymous donors - Thank You.)

2- A minor change to the Sunday (9/6) menu - the salad will be a Tossed Salad “AND” the Broccoli/Cauliflower/Raisin Salad. (Thanks to BOB HURLEY - our resident restauranteur)

3- The DECORATIONS COMMITTEE has provided a well budgeted plan for both the Winery and the Meridian Center that is elegantly simple and beautiful. (Sorry - no paper streamers or balloons on the tables this time - in case you were looking forward to that)

4- Reservations continue to come in to KIM SAYLOR - so we are off and running! (THANKS to ALL who have paid/registered and keep them coming. PLEASE mail your registration, today!

NOTE: We NEED a reservation count as soon as possible - we cannot emphasize this enough!

WHY? Several reasons actually - the Winery has a limited capacity and a count is necessary. Both venues require LARGE deposits based on number attending - we prefer to be closer on the counts now rather than hoping for a refund check later. Many of the items in the events require a holding charge or they will disappear - it’s better to know the amount actually needed than to waste YOUR money. Letting us know that you are going to be there helps us negotiate a better deal.

5- (Just a note, actually) This event has taken far more footwork, phone calls, emails, negotiations and “diplomacy” than past events to this point. Part of the problem is that ALL costs (particularly noticeable in foods) have risen so much in the last 5 years, and some of it is just the time we live in - everybody “charges” for everything (and some to the “extreme”). We have people coming to the Birthday Party from very far away and we will (hopefully) continue working for the most enjoyable and affordable event that we can provide.

We have had some interesting correspondence and QUERIES on this event - here is my feeble attempt to answer some of them for everybody (we HAVE responded directly to each question personally and will continue to do so).

1- CLOTHING: We have received a number of questions/comments concerning “dress requirements”. Everything from “we want to be able to wear something nice - special” to “we won’t attend if the event is too formal or dressy”! ! ! Whew - dagnabbit!

Our answer is simple - We have NO “dress requirements”! We are ALL adults and we are sure that YOU have learned (by now) how to dress yourself appropriately for a party with friends and neighbors. We can only hope that if you want to dress up for the “dance at the Winery” or the “dinner at the Meridian Center”, then you do so OR if you are more comfortable in a polo shirt and khakis, then there you go! We find that more people are interested in YOU than the clothes you are wearing.

KIM and I call this - Our “clothing optional plan” (a not so “inside” joke) It will be the end of summer in Kansas - it could be hot - it could be storming - we’re sure that you have something appropriate in your closet right now - so PLEASE do not let a “dress requirement” stop you from attending.

2- THE HOLIDAY DATE (TIMING): We have had several say the Labor Day Weekend was a good time for them and others say it didn’t work with their plans. We understand when we can’t hit it perfectly for everybody - someone’s long planned trips, etc. are out of our control, kind of like the weather, BUT some of the things we have heard are in YOUR control.

“I’m in a golf tournament!” Not ALL day - there is time to make a 6 p.m. dinner and the tournament is only on (1) day - there are other days to attend.

“It is the first football game of the season at our college!” Then attend the game - most first games are early, allowing for a possible return in time for dinner, and there are still other days to attend.

“We always do something with the kids and grandkids on Labor Day!” Great - be with the kids (believe us, we understand) and if at all possible, still make time in the evening to join your classmates for the Party each night.

It goes on - but the answer remains the same: If you want to be there AND can find a way to be there, then you will be! We just hope you make time to join us if possible.

3- COST: The only comments on cost we have had (so far) are basically “How can you do it so cheaply? Two meals out at a nice restaurant could cost more than that.”. THANK YOU for that - we will try to continue to keep it affordable.

THE NATURAL ODDITY

Every time we put on a class get-together, I have the spouse of a class member (just one) ask the same question, every time - it goes like this . . .

“Are you going to have a live band?”

“No.”

“Will the DJ take requests?”

“I’m sure he’ll do it if he can, if he has it with him - if you have requests, then tell me now and I’ll make sure it gets on the playlist. What’s your request?”

DULL STARE and DEAD SILENCE . . . .

“Well, just let me know - I’ll see to it that the song gets played!”

He never - ever - gives me a song.

BUT - If there is a song that YOU want played at the dance, then for heaven’s sake PLEASE tell me (or email me) - I will do everything I can to see that it is played for you.

I’m sure that there will be more info coming out in the weeks ahead - so please watch the website, and make plans now to attend the 65th Birthday Party - September 4, 5 and 6, 2015!

Italy or Newton?  Hard choice but alas, the old country is calling.  Not that I have any Italian in me but, hey.  Be honest.  What would you choose?  Have a great time!

BARB ( & ALL) - MORE INFO ON NEWTON HOTELS

There are two hotels in Newton we can recommend (neither ended up giving a very good deal on holding a block of rooms or providing a discount to our query).

The COMFORT INN on East First Street at I- 135 is next to BRAUM’S and MONTANA MIKE’S - you can click on the link below to book a room BE SURE TO SET “SELECT RATE” TO “SENIOR/AARP Rate” (it was the best $$ rate we could find). This site also has more info on the hotel.

Link to Comfort Inn Below:

http://www.comfortinn.com/hotel-newton-kansas-KS158

The HOLIDAY INN EXPRESS is on East Broadway at I-135 and is in the same parking lot as the MERIDIAN CENTER. It’s rates are about $15 to $25 per night higher than COMFORT INN - BUT once again - BE SURE TO SELECT “SENIOR RATE” to get the best price (AAA members can try that rate). Set destination to Newton, KS to see rates/availability.

Link To Holiday Inn Express Below:

http://www.ihg.com/holidayinnexpress/hotels/us/en/reservation

We hope this helps . . . REMEMBER - You can always use the internet for "discounted" room rates on several sites, like HOTWIRE, EXPEDIA, KAYAK, ad infinitum.

LATEST CLASS NEWS . . .

THE PARTY RESERVATION MAILBOX has been “real” quiet lately - We again ask that you get your reservation mailed into KIM SAYLOR as soon as possible, OR in the very least contact us to let us know if you are planning to attend. We need to get our “count” (at least close) by the end of May.

WE WILL START SENDING OUT PERSONAL EMAILS THIS MONTH TO SEE IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON ATTENDING - PLEASE EXTEND US THE COURTESY IN LETTING US KNOW.

THANKS to ALL who have sent in their reservations or contacted us that they will be attending!

This month’s Saturday Breakfast was WELL attended - with many welcome additions to the usual suspects, namely - JOHN FREY, MIKE RATZLAFF, CHARLES FRY and JOHN HROVAT. Most of the talk was idle chit-chat, but there was a question raised if any other “event” should be added to the BIRTHDAY PARTY schedule (for instance - one year we met at North Dillons parking lot and then cruised Main Street, etc.) - folks will be thinking on the question until the next Breakfast in June.

TERRY (BERNOWICH) SCHMITZ has been transferred to Life Care Center in Andover, Kansas for rehab after her back surgery last week. The spinal stenosis surgery was over 5 hours long and has been more painful than a previous surgery 9 years ago that was meant to address the same issue. She would love to hear from anyone that would like to give her a call at the Rehab Center, as it appears she will be there 7-10 days. (I don’t feel right posting the phone number out in the “open” on this website, so I will send it out in an email blast to classmates)

Beverly Roberson (Jackson)

Hello Tom,

I will not be able to attend the Birthday Celebration -saving up for Vegas. I wear my dragging Main hoodie often so I hope you all have an opportunity for "dragging" in memory or to salute those of us who can't make it for a variety of reasons.

Bev
