I first met Margie Grove in 7th grade when I made the big jump from St. Mary's to public school. She took me under her wing and we became best friends and lockermates throughout Junior High and High School. I'll never forget the day Margie marched into the Santa Fe Junior High office to call Bethel Hospital for me because I was too scared. She asked the nurse if my mom had had her baby yet, and then Margie yelled "Your mom had TWO babies." (This was way before sonograms and cell phones of course).
I remember all the fun slumber parties we had at her house when we looked up interesting "medical" (i.e., sex) terms in her dad's medical journals and snuck out to meet boys and smoke her mom's cigarettes. I learned so much from her. Margie was a great cook and decorator, and a fabulous hostess. She was a wonderful, sweet, gentle soul and we lost her much too soon. Margie died of complications from diabetes on May 3, 1990.
